Textiles & Sail

WELCOME

Hardraade has a fantastic textile group that is passionate about teaching and conveying authentic handicraft techniques from the Viking Age.

The group offers a varied range of activities, such as hand sewing of authentic Viking costumes, checker weaving, needle binding and leather work. Join us and explore history through hands-on learning!

OUR SEWING CABIN

In this charming historic house, overlooking the Steinsfjord, we invite you to join us on Saturdays from 11 am. When the weather permits, we gather around the cooking pit by the ship.

You don't need any prior knowledge – we'll help you get started and accompany you every step of the way. And don't forget that food is also served on Saturdays! 🌟

We also meet at Frivillighetes hus in Hønefoss once a week. You join when you have the time and desire. No pressure and stress here in the yard.

VIKING CLOTHES

The Vikings were skilled craftsmen who made clothes and textiles using traditional methods. Their costumes were hand-sewn, and they used various techniques to create beautiful and functional garments.

Do you want to make your own strapdress or tunica?

TABLET WEAVING

Woven bands were a common technique in the Viking Age and were used to decorate clothing, bags, and other items. Today, they are mostly used for bands for our national costume, the bunad.

It's just great that the technique is still alive! And it's easier to learn than you think

We offer several beginner courses each year. Sign up for our newsletter and you will receive dates.

THE SAIL

With great care and accuracy, Hardraade has woven meters of courses by hand that will become an authentic Viking sail.

We've used wool from the Short Tail Landrace Sheep with a challenging twist of 420 per meter. That the Vikings mastered this is admirable, to say the least.
