WHAT'S GOING ON

Queen Åsta, formerly known as the Hardraade ship, is now safely moored at its dock in Vintervika, overlooking Steinsfjorden. The Viking ship measures over 20 meters and weighs around 4.7 tons, with room for as many as 28 rowers!

Even though the ship has been launched, there's still much work to be done. We are now starting the process of building and installing the rigging, including the mast and sail yard, so that we can hoist the sail next summer.

Our new Boat Team has its hands full, too! They will begin practical and theoretical training for all members who want to learn how to row and sail. In addition, our schedule is packed with guided tours, and we'll be welcoming several local school classes through the Cultural School Program.

THE BOATING ASSOCIATION

Join the Hardraade crew!

We have formed a boat crew! This is your chance to learn practical seamanship, experience incredible nature, and get a rare glimpse into maritime history.

Starting autumn 2025, members can join us to row the Hardraade ship on Steinsfjorden. Keep an eye on our newsletters for more information.

Next spring, you can also experience the thrill of sailing with a square sail! Seize the opportunity to join the Hardraade boat crew!

Do you have experience with sailing, navigation, or seamanship? That's fantastic, we'd love to hear from you! Please get in touch! 😊

If you'd like to join our rowing team this fall, you'll need to become a member.

VOLUNTEER WORK

The heart of our project!

Every Saturday, all year round, from 11 AM to 3 PM, and every Thursday from 4 PM to 8 PM, there's much activity at our build site.

Feel free to drop by whenever you like and stay as long as you want! 😊 There’s no rush here, just great company and a chance to learn something new.

Our environment is perfect for volunteers who want to learn new and exciting skills. Join us and discover traditional crafts such as runic carving, sewing Viking clothing, weaving, forging, boatbuilding, and woodcarving.

Our dedicated food group ensures that lunch is always a highlight, complete with coffee and cakes for all volunteers.

WE RECOMMEND

Since you are in the area anyway, we recommend that you also take a trip to Veien Cultural Heritage Park which is located in Hønefoss. This is an exciting archaeological museum with longhouses, exhibitions, burial mounds and nice café with an amazing view!

Sundvolden Hotel, one of our dearest partners and sponsors, delivers generous weekly food donations to our volunteers. We greatly appreciate their contribution, especially considering their acclaimed cuisine. If you're visiting Hardraade, you should definitely stop by the hotel for a tasty bite to eat – you won't regret it! In addition, we can recommend an overnight stay in their historic rooms. They also have a super nice spa :)

VEIEN CULTURAL
HERITAGE PARK

Here you will find one of Eastern Norway's largest burial grounds from the Early Iron Age.

With over 100 burial mounds, and a rebuilt longhouse from Roman times, you can learn a lot about how the Vikings' ancestors lived.

If you have the opportunity, we recommend a trip to Veien before visiting Hardraade. Then you get to experience a real time travel!
