About Hardraade
The Hardraade Viking Ship Association is currently building a full-scale Viking ship in Sundvollen, which will sail on Tyrifjorden. The ship is being constructed in the traditional manner, using authentic materials as it was done during the Viking Age. The ship will be launched in the summer of 2025.
The name “Hardraade” is derived from the legendary Viking king Harald Hardråde (1015-1066), who came from Stein Gård near Steinsfjorden in Hole. He was also the half-brother of Olav the Holy and is known as the last Viking king.
According to the sagas, Harald managed to conquer a total of 80 cities across the Mediterranean! It is said that he had no scruples, which may explain the origin of the name “Hardraade.”
The Hardraade project is open to participation by volunteers, both experienced and inexperienced, and offers a variety of activities. We engage in traditional craftsmanship, including carpentry, sailmaking, forging, tar production, wood carving, runic script, costume sewing, and much more!
Our Shipyard
The construction site is only an hour away from Oslo and has become a popular place to visit for the whole family. You can also book a tour for your group, company, or group of friends. Perhaps you’d like to try your hand at the forge or greet Odin and his ravens?
