PROGRAM
After over a hundred thousand hours of volunteer work, the currently unnamed ship is finally ready for its maiden launch!
This impressive hybrid replica of the Klåstad ship found in 1893 has been built using traditional authentic methods. From its sturdy planking to the beautiful hand-woven sail – come and witness the remarkable craftsmanship up close on August 30th.
The weekend kicks off on Friday evening at Sundvolden Hotel with dinner and a lecture on Viking culture, archaeological finds, and textiles.
Saturday continues with the lecture "How to Build a Viking Ship," followed by the grand launching ceremony.
With the ship as the stage, there will several performances, and the sail will be brought on board for the first time. The ship will be christened before it meets the fjords.
The evening offers a concert at Sundvolden Hotel featuring "Gåte" (acoustic) and the opening act "Korkene" with Herman Lie.

Join us for an engaging evening at Sundvolden Hotel on Friday, August 29th! In the Sundvolden cinema, you'll have the opportunity to hear fascinating presentations from three experts. The evening will conclude with a delicious three-course dinner.
Are you a true Viking enthusiast? Then this is an evening you won't want to miss!
Lectures are in Norwegian and start at 6 pm. Dinner starts at 8 pm. If you only wish to attend the lectures, tickets for all three can be purchased for NOK 150 at the door. There are plenty of seats!

Hilde Helene Wergeland
Sail and textiles
The evening will begin with a presentation by Hilde Helene Wergeland, leader of the Textile and Sailmaking Group, who will discuss the sail project "from wool to sail."
Following this, Steinar Gravdal, captain of the Hardraade Viking Ship Association, will conclude the evening by sharing insights into the characteristics of the square sail and the art of sailing with such a sail.
Ellen Marie Næss
The Oseberg Ship
Ellen Marie Næss is an archaeologist and works as a university lecturer at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo.
Additionally, she is the subject editor for Norse religion at Store Norske Leksikon (the Great Norwegian Encyclopedia).
Since 2006, she has been a key figure in the exhibition work and public outreach at the Viking Ship Museum.
Now, with the closure of the old museum, her dedication continues in the development of exhibitions and outreach at the new Viking Age Museum.
Astrid Bryde
Viking clothing and textiles
Astri Bryde is an increasingly internationally recognized Viking Age enthusiast with a Master's degree in Norwegian traditional arts.
Having researched Viking Age clothing for over 15 years, she has led courses and given lectures on three continents.
Astri has actively contributed to developing expertise in sewing and textiles within Hardraade.

LAUNCHING OF THE HARDRAADE SKIP
To ensure good views during the launch, we will set up two grandstands, one on each side of the ship. The day begins at 2:00 PM in the Sundvolden cinema with a fascinating presentation by Jan Knutsen, who will tell you everything about the Hardraade ship and how to build a Viking ship.
At 4:00 PM, the starting signal will sound for the long-awaited launch of the Hardraade ship at Sundvollsstranda – an event celebrated in true Viking style! Throughout the event, Hole arbeidssenter will ensure you can enjoy both good food and drinks.

Jan Knutsen
Boat builder

Ever since he was five years old, he has been fascinated by tools and the act of creating things.
After finishing secondary school, he began an apprenticeship in boatbuilding on Nøtterøy. Since then, he has worked with wooden boats of all kinds.
In 2011, a unique opportunity arose: to build a replica of the Oseberg ship. Since then, his daily life has been filled with Viking ships and other artifacts from the Viking Age.
Following the Oseberg project, he went on to become the construction manager for the Klåstad ship in Tønsberg, then the Hardraade ship in Sundvollen, and he is now involved in the exciting Gokstad ship project.
